Colonoscopy :
Colonoscopy is a diagnostic procedure performed to examine the inside of large intestine and diagnose gastrointestinal diseases and is conducted by a gastroenterologist or a colorectal surgeon. Colonoscopy is recommended for people suffering with unexplained rectal bleeding or discharge, unexplained persistent abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss or lack of weight gain in children and unexplained changes in the bowel habits like diarrhea, constipation or incontinence. Colonoscopy is useful to diagnose conditions such as chronic colitis conditions like ulcerative colitis or crohn's disease, ischemic colitis, intestinal ischemia, diverticulosis, diverticulitis, ulcers and perforations, large bowel obstructions, colorectal cancer and colorectal polyps. During a colonoscopy, any polyps that are found are also removed by a specialist and tested further to rule out cancer. Colonoscopy is also used to seal the wounds, remove blockages, inject medications, place stents and treat tissues with laser therapy while doing a colonoscopy.
