Diabetes in children are classified into type-1 and type-2 diabetes, out of which type-1 diabetes is very predominant in children and is known as juvenile diabetes. The duration of acquiring this type 1 diabetes in children is from ages 5 to 13 years. It is characterized by increased thirst, frequent urination and fatigue even with minimal activity. In type-1 diabetes, the hormone called insulin is not secreted in sufficient amounts. It causes increase amounts of blood glucose and excretion of glucose along with urine. One of the early signs to notice the presence of diabetes in children is to monitor their urinating frequency and sudden onset of bed wetting habits at night. It may cause dehydration if not monitored in severe cases. While the diabetes type-2 is known as adult onset disease, children with obesity may acquire it. It can be managed by blood glucose monitoring, insulin therapy and diabetic diet regimen.
