Diabetes in Children

Diabetes in Children
Q.

Hi Doctor. How fatal is Type 1 diabetes? And is it curable? In this scenario, what is the typical way of life? Can ladies with Type 1 Diabetes safely carry children?

A.

Type 1 diabetes is due to absolute insulin deficiency due to autoimmune destruction of insulin producing beta cells. The only treatment option for type 1 diabetic patients is insulin, which should be given multiple times. At present, it is not curable but treatable. Women can carry a child but should have good glycemic control before planning pregnancy.
