An oncologist is described as a cancer doctor who undergoes advanced specialization to diagnose and manage several types of cancers affecting a person. To qualify as an oncologist, the academic qualifications that are needed include MBBS, and post graduation degree, MD/ DNB in General Medicine, followed by a super specialization DM in Medical Oncology or MS/ DNB in General Surgery and an additional sub specialization, M Ch/ DNB in Surgical Oncology or MD/ DNB in Radiotherapy and Oncology. An oncologist is categorized into three different types, based on the type of treatment they offer. Medical oncologists use chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, and hormonal therapy to treat cancer using modalities like chemotherapy, immunotherapy, hormonal therapy, and targeted therapy, whereas a radiation oncologist uses high-energy radiation therapy to manage cancer. A surgical oncologist performs various surgical procedures to get rid of the tumor. The services provided by an oncologist include staging the cancer, recommending various treatment options, providing follow-up care to the patient, and monitoring the post-treatment complications.
