Anal Fissures :
An anal fissure is described as a tear or crack in the lining of the anal canal. This anal fissure may lead to symptoms such as pain in the anal region, itching, and bleeding during the passage of stools. The other symptoms seen when there are anal fissures are muscle spasms and a lump in that area. The common causes for these anal fissures are a low fiber diet, constipation, straining to pass stools, trauma, childbirth, anal intercourse, and frequent diarrhea. The other less common causes can be anal cancer, tuberculosis, HIV, Crohn's disease, and syphilis. The diagnosis of anal fissures starts with physical examination, anoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy, and colonoscopy. The treatment options to manage the anal fissures are nonsurgical treatments such as application of nitroglycerin topically, anesthetic creams to relieve pain, botox injections, and high blood pressure medications. Surgical treatment is indicated when there are chronic fissures and symptoms are so severe.
