Ear Pain :
Pain in or near the ear, medically described as earache is a sense of discomfort felt in the ear. Some of the causes include ear infection, medically described as otitis media or otitis externa, which simply means that these are infections due to swelling or infection inside the ear canal or in the middle ear caused by bacteria or viruses. Other causes are the accumulation of earwax, sinus infection, teeth problems like abscesses, or a change in air pressure like when flying or diving. Ear pain can vary and could present as a sharp or dull ache, muffled hearing, itching, or fluid from the ear. In some instances, fever or dizziness may accompany the pain. However, depending on the cause of ear pain treatment will follow. Many ear infections are resolved by antibiotics or ear drops prescribed by an ENT specialist, or medications that relieve the pain through the use of ibuprofen or paracetamol. An ear drop solution can be applied to soften the wax if it becomes hard, or an ENT specialist can remove the wax using special instruments.
