Question & Answers in
Ear Pain

Ear Pain
Q.

Greetings, doctors, this is Pooja from Bangalore. What are the most common causes of ear pain? Also, how can I detect if I have an eardrum problem? Please make a suggestion.

A.

Hello Pooja, thank you for your query. Ear pain can have many reasons. For example, it can be from an infection inside the ear. The most common causes are hard wax accumulation, fungal infection of the ear and fluid accumulation behind the ear drum/infection of the ear drum. Ear pain can also be felt from an infection in the mouth, teeth, tonsil or sinus, as all these sites have the same nerve supply. Hence, in these cases, the ear will look absolutely normal, and the treating ENT specialist can determine the cause of the pain and treat it accordingly. Coming to your next query, any eardrum infection can come with ear pain, pus /liquid discharge from the ear, and sometimes hearing difficulty. To confirm, it has to be checked by an ENT specialist.
