Sigmoidoscopy :
Sigmoidoscopy is a diagnostic procedure that aids in visualizing the inside of the rectum and sigmoid colon. Sigmoidoscopy is performed using a flexible, lighted tube with a camera fitted at the end and is recommended to check for problems associated with the colon and rectum. Sigmoidoscopy is indicated for people with signs like rectal bleeding or blood in the stool, lower abdominal pain or pelvic pain, unintentional weight loss and changes in stool or stool habits. Sigmoidoscopy is helpful in diagnosing conditions such as inflammation in the intestinal lining like colitis or proctitis, scar tissue that narrows the intestine, ulcers in the colon or rectum, infected pockets in the intestinal lining, colorectal prolapse and gastrointestinal bleeding. The preparation for sigmoidoscopy involves limiting the diet for 24 hours before the test, taking a laxative formula before night and stopping certain medications the day before the test, taking an enema or suppository that will help in making them poop before the test.
