Melasma :
Melasma is a medical condition which clinically manifests as patches of skin discoloration. It is most commonly seen on facial regions. The discolored skin patches can significantly vary in shape and size. It is caused due to hormonal changes during pregnancy or due to birth control medications, increased exposure to sun, thyroid disorders and strong familial history. A certified dermatologist will conduct clinical examinations and provide necessary treatment options. Topical application of hydroquinone, kojic acid and retinoids can effectively lighten the discolorations. Other non-invasive procedures such as microdermabrasion, chemical peeling and laser therapy can produce similar results. Adhering to sun protection with SPF 30 or higher creams, avoidance of hormonal fluctuations or triggers and maintenance of regular skin care are all proven methods to prevent melasma. If the symptoms worsen or the discoloration causes associated irritation, further evaluation to rule out skin cancers can be considered.
