Ear Pain :
Ear pain, also called otalgia, may begin from a location outside the ear or within the ear and occurs due to several factors. Ear pain is classified into two types: primary earache and secondary earache. The factors responsible for causing primary ear pain include barotrauma, which means air or water pressure changes, eustachian tube dysfunction, the buildup of earwax, inner ear infections, middle ear infections, ruptured eardrum and swimmer's ear, and this condition originates in the ear. Secondary ear pain occurs due to factors like colds, allergies, GERD, toothaches, TMJ disorders, sore throat, tonsillitis and sinusitis, which are not related to the ears. To manage ear pain, various methods are recommended, such as medications like antibiotics, antifungals and corticosteroids, ear drops, using hot and cold packs and cleaning ears with care. It is important to visit a doctor if ear pain is also accompanied by ear drainage, hearing loss, nausea and vomiting, swelling or discolouration around the ear, fever and chills.
