Sigmoidoscopy is a procedure used to evaluate the condition of sigmoid portion of your large intestine. Its used to observe and examine the sigmoid and if need a biopsy can be taken fur further analysis. Its an useful diagnostic tool for an array of GI tract related disorders and diseases as colitis, diverticulitis, ulcers, colorectal polyps , GI bleeding.
In most cases the patient might not need an anesthesia as in colonoscopy. Carbon dioxide gas is used to inflate the intestine for better visualization, the gas will be passed s flatulence post the sigmoidoscopy. Its a day care procedure done in 15 minutes with minimal risk to patient. Contains both flexible and rigid[proctoscope] sigmoidoscopes
