Colitis in adults is an inflammatory condition affecting the significant portion of the large intestine. Colon is associated with secretion of feces matter. Any disturbance or inflammation due to infection/food poisoning or injury to the lining of the colon results in change in bowel movements like diarrhea or constipation, blood or mucus production in bowels, bloating or abdominal pain. It can either have acute onset or chronic in nature. Some of the conditions that cause colitis are bacterial infections, intestinal ischaemia/aneurysm, allergic reaction/lactose intolerance, inflammatory bowel disease, damage to colon post radiation. It may complicate further raising the risk of colon cancer, intestinal perforation, large bowel obstruction, and other inflammatory conditions affects other parts of the body. It is evaluated thoroughly by gastroenterologist with help of physical examination, diagnostic and imaging labs, endoscopic procedures and biopsy of the colon to diagnose the stage of colitis.
