Endoscopy :
Endoscopy is one of the procedures commonly advised and performed by a medical gastroenterologist to detect any abnormalities in the digestive tract. A long, thin, flexible tube that carries a light and camera is passed through the mouth, which runs through the esophagus into the stomach and takes pictures if any abnormality is detected. Diseases like polyps, ulcers, bleeding, carcinoma, and obstruction can be easily detected by an endoscopy. Recent developments in endoscopy include a capsule endoscopy, where the patient has to just swallow a capsule, which passes down through the digestive system, and pictures can be obtained. Endoscopy can be done on an outpatient basis. It may be performed under sedation. Patients need to be in a fasting state prior to endoscopy. Post-endoscopy, the patient might experience throat discomfort, abdominal discomfort and nausea which might last for few hours or 1 to 2 days. Depending upon the result of the endoscopy, a further course of action would be suggested to the patient. Lifestyle modifications would also be suggested.
