Tongue cancer :

Tongue cancer can be diagnosed under an oral pathologists supervision. A specialised x-ray can be taken with barium in soluble form. First the diagnosis is initially based on physical examination. Then a barium swallow is followed by CT, MRI, and PET scans to get detailed outline of the cancer spread. A simple tissue sample can be obtained for biopsy. In incisional biopsy, a small piece of the tongue in the effected area is cut in elliptical shape for laboratory diagnosis. If a further spread is suspected, endoscopy can be performed. The throat and soft palate are examined in that diagnostic method. Based on these couple of imaging studies, tongue cancer staging is established for further treatment. This is termed as TNM staging where a series of numbers are assigned to the cancer. Any treatment plan is followed after staging and diagnosis of tongue cancer to include surgical oncology assessment.
