What is cancer?
| Our body operates on a natural equilibrium of formation of new cells and the death of old cells. Cancer is a group of diseases as a result of uncontrolled formation, growth and spread of cells. Which means that unlike normal regulated cells, cancer cells form a lump or mass as a result of constant cell division. In cancer cells the DNA repair system inside the cells is faulty. As a result of this, they cannot repair themselves leading to production of more and more cells. Cancers are broadly divided as Carcinomas which occur on the skin or the lining membranes of the internal organs. Sarcoma, which are the cancers of the blood and other connective tissues. Leukaemias affecting the white blood cells and the ones affecting the immune system of the body. These cancers can be benign in the form of tumors or malignant that spread to other body parts. Most types of cancer have four stages ranging from 1 to 4 based on the extent. |
