Multiple Myeloma :

Multiple myeloma is a blood cancer that affects specific white blood cells called plasma cells. Plasma cells are responsible for making antibodies that fight germs. When multiple myeloma develops, these plasma cells become cancerous and build up in the bone marrow. These cancerous cells then make abnormal antibodies that damage the body. Most patients with this condition develop anemia (lack of hemoglobin) and also develop damage in the kidneys and bones.

The symptoms of multiple myeloma include tiredness, easily falling sick, weight loss, numbness in the limbs and nausea. The diagnosis of this condition requires a number of tests, including blood tests, CT scans, urine tests, and a biopsy.

The treatment of multiple myeloma usually involves multiple cancer therapies such as immunotherapy, chemotherapy and targeted therapy. In some cases, a stem cell transplant is also performed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Multiple myeloma is a blood cancer that affects white blood cells known as plasma cells, and causes the formation of abnormal plasma cell accumulation in the bone marrow.
Multiple myeloma doctors say that multiple myeloma is not a common blood cancer. It is more commonly seen in the older age group and is more common in men than in women.
Anybody can be affected by multiple myeloma, but the condition is more commonly seen in the elderly age group, male gender, black race, those with a family history of multiple myeloma, and a history of a condition called MGUS or monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance.
In an individual with multiple myeloma, mutations in the DNA of plasma cells cause the production and multiplication of abnormal plasma cells. These plasma cells begin to accumulate in the bone marrow and prevent the production of normal plasma cells that are essential for the formation of antibodies that fight infections.
Multiple myeloma symptoms include:

  • Pain in the bones of the chest and spine,
  • Fever
  • Weight loss
  • Constipation
  • Confusion
  • Tiredness
  • Increased thirst
  • Muscle weakness etc.

Multiple myeloma results when there is a mutation in the plasma cells within the bone marrow, which leads to the development of abnormal plasma cells that multiply at a rapid rate and begin to accumulate in the bone marrow, reducing the production of normal plasma cells.
Hematologists diagnose multiple myeloma based on symptoms, medical and family history, clinical examination to evaluate symptoms and overall health, and investigations such as blood tests to look for M proteins and beta 2 microglobulin proteins that are released by the abnormal plasma cells, urine analysis for M proteins, bone marrow aspiration and biopsy, and imaging tests such as X-rays, and CT/MRI/PET scans.
