A Hematologist is a doctor who specializes in identifying and treating diseases and medical conditions affecting the blood, bone marrow and lymphatic systems.
A qualified Haematologist completes 5½ years of training in MBBS followed by 3 years of training in MD or DNB in Internal Medicine, followed by 3 years training in DM, Hematology
Medical conditions treated by a Hematologist include different types of anemia, cancers of the blood and bone marrow, and congenital or acquired bleeding and clotting disorders.
Diseases such as various types of anemia, Leukemias, Lymphoma, multiple Myeloma, Hemophilia, Thalassemia, ITP, sepsis, blood transfusion, and bone marrow transplant are diagnosed and treated by Haematologists.
A referral to a Haematologist is usually done by a general physician if there are indications of conditions affecting the blood cells, bone marrow, lymph nodes, or spleen.
The symptoms of blood disorders depend on the medical problem but fatigue, weakness, headaches, dizziness, irregular heartbeat, breathlessness, excessive bleeding or bruising, bone pain, frequent infections are seen.
A Haematologist will discuss your problem with you and inquire in detail about your symptoms and perform an examination if required, and order blood tests and imaging tests.
A Haematologist may ask for blood tests such as CBP, ESR, liver and renal function, blood sugar levels, etc. Additional tests such as bone marrow biopsy, X-rays, CT, or MRI, may be advised.
Hematologists are qualified to oversee and perform a bone marrow or a stem cell transplant.
Apart from discussing symptoms, seeking advice on probable causes, side effects of prescribed medications, restrictions on activities or diet, and additional management and preventive measures is helpful.
