What are the symptoms of malaria?

Malaria symptoms vary based on the malarial parasite responsible for the infection. Symptoms of malaria can include high fever with chills occurring in cycles, headaches, tiredness, muscle pains and joint pains, nausea/vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, anaemia, and excessive sweating. The presence and severity of symptoms vary between individuals, and not everyone will have all the symptoms all the time.

What is the fastest treatment for malaria?

The fastest treatment for malaria depends on factors such as the type of malarial parasite responsible for the infection, the individual's age, the severity of the illness, their overall health, and any other medical conditions they may have. In general, anti-malarial medications and supportive care are advised.

Can malaria go without treatment?

Malaria prevention specialists state that it is a parasitic infection that can be life-threatening if left untreated or improperly treated. It is essential to take the entire course of the prescribed medication to eliminate the parasite and prevent complications such as severe anemia, organ failure, brain damage, and more.
Frequently Asked Questions
Several tests can detect and confirm the presence of malaria. These include blood smears for malarial parasites, which involves microscopic examination of blood samples, Rapid Diagnostic Tests (RDTs) to detect malarial antigens, and PCR tests to detect malarial parasite genetic material.
Among all the malarial parasitic infections, infection with Plasmodium falciparum is considered the most serious, as per the malaria specialist. Plasmodium falciparum malaria is associated with cerebral malaria, severe anaemia, circulatory failure and shock if left untreated. Other forms of malaria too can turn tough if proper treatment is not given.
There is a vaccine currently available for malaria. Although it is not widely known and its effectiveness in preventing malaria is not thoroughly studied, it has been shown to reduce the recurrence of malaria and prevent severe malaria from developing in children. The vaccine requires multiple doses and booster shots to maintain its effectiveness.
The duration of treatment and response varies among individuals depending on the type of malarial parasite present, the presence of complications, and the individual's overall health. Uncomplicated malaria can be cured within three days of initiating therapy for specific parasites, while it may take longer for others and those with complications.
The cost of malaria treatment in regions where the disease is endemic is generally cheaper and more affordable. However, the cost of treatment depends on various factors, including the severity of the infection, any complications, the need for hospitalization, and other factors.
Specialists to consult for diagnosing and treating malaria include infectious diseases, tropical medicine specialists, and internal medicine or general physicians. These specialists are trained and skilled in diagnosing infectious diseases, including malaria and its complications. For children with malaria, it is advisable to seek consultation with a pediatrician.
