What are the different types of Diabetes
Diabetes mellitus (DM)is of Type 1 DM and Type 2 DM.
- Type 1 is less common than type 2. Type 1 DM is usually seen in younger age groups and children. The primary underlying pathology is the failure of insulin-secreting cells of the pancreas, which leads to significantly less insulin in the body, causing rising blood sugar levels.
These patients may present with complications of DM at younger ages like diabetic retinopathy (affecting eyes and vision loss), nephropathy (affecting kidneys) etc.
- Type 2 DM usually presents in middle-aged individuals, where insulin secretion from the pancreas is normal or may be higher than expected and still has high blood sugar levels. This is due to insulin resistance, i.e., the body does not react normally to endogenous insulin. These patients may be overweight, and Long term complications arise later than in type 1 DM.
Both types of DM are seen more commonly in people with a family history of DM.
Prediabetes is a condition when blood sugar levels are 100-125mg/dl in a fasting state. This signifies the future development possibility for overt DM.
What are the tests and common procedures initiated by a Diabetologist near me?
A Diabetologist Specialist should diagnose diabetes by having a blood sugar test (in fasting) and post-lunch sugar. Blood glucose above 125mg/dl in fasting or above 200mg/dl 2hrs post-lunch diagnoses diabetes mellitus.
Fasting blood sugars of 100-125 mg/dl are prediabetes., which means future development of DM may be impending.
- Another test, HBA1C, can also be used where levels above 6.5 per cent will diagnose DM.
- Once diagnosed with DM, the diabetologist may order more tests like lipid profile, thyroid function tests, renal function tests, ECG, etc.
