Diabetes in Pregnancy :
Diabetes in pregnancy can be referred to as gestational diabetes. This type of diabetes can be seen in women during pregnancy and the blood sugar levels will be high. Generally, diabetes in pregnant women develops due to the blockage of the ability to use insulin by the placental hormones and thus results in high blood sugar levels. The symptoms that can be seen with diabetes in pregnancy include excessive thirst, frequent urination, nausea, and tiredness. Gestational diabetes may lead to risks to the baby, such as breathing problems during birth, obesity, premature birth, higher birth weight, hypoglycemia, and may have type 2 diabetes later in their life. Gestational diabetes can be monitored during 24 to 28 weeks of pregnancy. The diagnosis of gestational diabetes can be based on the glucose tolerance test and glucose challenge test. Gestational diabetes can be treated by monitoring the baby's growth in the womb with regular ultrasound scans, consuming healthy food, monitoring blood sugar levels, and being hydrated by drinking lots of water.

How to prevent Diabetes in Pregnancy?
While gestational diabetes cannot always be prevented entirely, there are steps you can take to lower your risk and promote a healthy pregnancy. Some measures that can be taken include:
- Maintain a Healthy Weight: Achieve and maintain a healthy weight before pregnancy.
- Eat a Balanced Diet: Rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats and limit sugary foods, refined carbohydrates, and processed snacks.
- Limit Sugary Beverages: Reduce or eliminate sugary beverages from your diet.
- Avoid Smoking and Alcohol: Quit smoking and limit alcohol consumption before pregnancy, and avoid it altogether during pregnancy.
- Manage Stress: through meditation, deep breathing, yoga, or mindfulness.
- Prenatal Care: Get regular prenatal check-ups.
- Monitor Blood Sugar Levels: Blood sugar monitoring at home if you have risk factors for gestational diabetes.
What are the symptoms of Diabetes in Pregnancy?
The symptoms of Diabetes in Pregnancy can include the following:
- No Symptoms: This may not cause noticeable symptoms.
- Increased Thirst and Urination: Increased thirst (polydipsia) and a need to urinate more frequently (polyuria).
- Fatigue: Feeling unusually tired or weak, although fatigue is a common pregnancy symptom.
- Increased Hunger: Constant hunger, even after eating, due to the body's inability to effectively utilize glucose for energy.
- Blurred Vision: High blood sugar levels can affect the eye's lens.
Why does Diabetes happen in Pregnancy?
Diabetes in Pregnancy usually develops in the second or third trimester and grows because the body cannot meet the increased insulin requirement during pregnancy. Some responsible factors include the following:
- Hormonal Changes: Placental hormones that help the baby grow and develop can interfere with the body's ability to use insulin effectively.
- Increased Insulin Resistance: As pregnancy progresses, the body naturally becomes more insulin resistant to ensure enough glucose for the developing baby.
- Pancreatic Insufficiency: The pancreas might not produce enough insulin to overcome the increased insulin resistance during pregnancy.
- Genetic and Family History: A family history of diabetes increases the risk.
- Overweight or Obesity: Excess body weight can contribute to insulin resistance.
