Malaria is a parasitic infectious disease caused by Plasmodium and transmitted by the bite of mosquitoes. Headaches, Fever and shivering, tiredness, joint pains, vomiting are the common symptoms which usually begin 1 – 4 weeks after infection, while severe infections may present with jaundice, seizures, coma and death. The fever usually comes and goes every two days in P.ovale and P.vivax malaria and every 3 days in P.malariae and P. falciparum. Falciparum malaria is the most severe form of malaria and can cause cerebral malaria with abnormal posturing, nystagmus, vision palsy, seizures, and coma. Malaria in pregnant women is an important cause of abortions, still births, infant mortality and low birth weight.
