Glaucoma:
Glaucoma can cause irreversible blindness in many people. The initial treatment modality after diagnosis is eye drops or laser trabeculoplasty. These procedures reduce the intraocular pressure to enhance vision. When they fail, minimally invasive glaucoma surgery or MIGS is employed by eye surgeons. The trabecular meshwork is responsible for increasing the intraocular pressure leading to damage to the optic nerve in the eye. For MIGS Schlemm’s canal is used as a channel to reach this meshwork. Alternatively, another area called as the suprachoroidal space can also be used. These channels essentially serve as a pathway to place a stent to keep draining the fluid that is built up in the eye. Under anesthesia an incision is made to insert the stent as a port at the back of the eye. Then using a magnification device, which is an advanced microscope in most cases, the channel is cleared of fluid and debris before a stent is implanted. This is the most advanced way to treat glaucoma.
