Is coronary angioplasty a major surgery?
Coronary angioplasty also known as percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) is a heart surgery that is used to widen the narrowed or blocked arteries in the heart. This is performed by a cardiologist in patients where medications have not alleviated the symptoms of the heart disease. Blocked arteries are often symptomatic leading to angina or chest pain and when untreated lead to heart attacks which can be life threatening. Angioplasty is not considered as a major surgery since this is done in a catheterization lab using local anaesthesia. After applying a small amount of local anesthetic to the leg or arm, a catheter or a hollow tube is guided to the blockage site. After that, a wire with an inflatable balloon (hence the name balloon angioplasty) is blown up to expand the narrow arteries ultimately restoring the blood flow. Coronary angioplasty is referred to as a minimally invasive surgery with less incisions and is one of the most commonly performed heart surgeries. |
