What is coronary angiography and how is it done?
| Coronary Angiography is a popular diagnostic technique that is used by the cardiologists to gain knowledge about the health of your heart. When your cardiologist suspects that there could be a blockage in the blood vessels of the heart as a result of the symptoms you reported during your appointment, they will order an angiogram or an angiography. This helps to establish further plan of treatment. In an Angiography advanced x rays are used which are different from the normal x rays as they pick up a contrast dye that is inserted. This is a fairly less invasive procedure and you will be awake for the angiography. In the first step some local anesthesia is applied to the wrist or groin region where a small cut is placed to insert a thin hollow tube. This is called a catheter and is inserted and continued till it reaches the heart. The process can be monitored by the surgeon and when the contrast dye is sent in, some tingling can be felt. When the dye reaches the blood vessels, x rays are taken which precisely indicate the narrowing or blockage of the heart valves or other cardiac abnormalities. A Coronary Angiogram typically lasts for forty minutes to an hour. |
