Aortic Valve Replacement - AVR :
Aortic Valve Replacement - AVR is a surgical procedure performed to correct the damage in aortic valve. Aortic valve is present between lower left ventricle which holds oxygenated blood from the lungs, and the largest aorta that supplies blood to rest of the body parts. Aortic valve thus regulates the blood flow and pressure. Any damage or disturbance in the aortic valve like congenital heart defect, aortic valve prolapse or stenosis/thickening of the aortic valve leaflets; will cause strain on the left ventricle to pump blood with extra effort. To reverse this defect or damage to the aortic valve, either open heart surgery or minimally invasive surgery is elected. Some of the AVR procedures may include annuloplasty and valvuloplasty techniques. Some of the common risks include bleeding, infections, failure of the treatment, damage to underlying vital structures, stroke and even death.
