Short Stature :
When a child is significantly shorter in height than other children of the same age, it is said that the child has a short stature. A child can develop a short stature in the early years, but the condition is usually noticed in puberty. There are several possible causes of short stature, including a deficiency of growth hormones. In many cases, children develop a short stature due to a constitutional delay. However, short stature can also occur due to genetics, chronic diseases, malnutrition and psychosocial stress.
A paediatrician can determine the underlying cause with a physical exam and tests such as blood tests and imaging tests. The treatment depends on the underlying cause. Treatment of short stature may involve improving the diet. The doctor may also provide medications to stimulate the release of growth hormones. But in many cases, a doctor may suggest waiting for some months and seeing if the child's body starts growing on its own.
