Short Stature :
Short stature refers to the child or adolescent who is significantly shorter than the average height of his or her age and sex. This is identified with congenital, growth hormone deficiencies, hypothyroidism, Turner syndrome and severe malnutrition. The presence of short stature negatively impacts the self esteem and interpersonal interaction with other children. Hence early diagnosis is critical. Some of the common signs and symptoms include being below the third percentile continuously in height on the growth charts. A diagnosis will be made taking a proper medical history and carrying out a physical examination, tests like blood tests, and X-rays to diagnose bone age. The treatment applied will also depend on the cause of this condition. If it is caused by hormonal deficiency, the patient may require growth hormone therapy. In other cases, there would be remediation in nutritional or medical factors. Follow up checkup is to track the progress of the growth.
