Ruptured eardrum :
The eardrum is part of the middle ear, which vibrates when sound hits the drum(membrane) and sends it to the tiny bones called ossicles, where it is converted into electrical signals and travels to the brain, where it reads the sound waves. A severe infection or trauma can cause a ruptured eardrum and result in loss of hearing, symptoms like sudden hearing loss, sharp pain, frequent discharge from the ear due to infection, and tinnitus ( buzzing vibration in the ears). Accidents like when a small object is used inside the ear can lead to a tear of the eardrum and result in infections. Loud noise and ruptured ear drum can seen in some head injury cases. Damage to the ear can be diagnosed by hearing tests like audiometry/audiogram and tympanometry. Most of the ruptured ears will heal on their own, and in severe cases, surgeries like myringoplasty and tympanoplasty help reconstruct the eardrum.
