Urinary Incontinence :
Urinary incontinence (UI) is a condition in which the person has no control in passing the urine ie,. uncontrolled leakage of urine also known as involuntary urination. It terribly effects the quality of life and causes low self esteem. It is most commonly seen in geriatric population/old age. The major risk factors for UI include pregnancy , child birth and menopause, others include weakened pelvic floor muscles, overactive bladder muscles, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease , prostate issues like BPH ( benign prostatic hypertrophy), prostatitis, sedatives, antidepressants, impacted stool, urinary tract infections etc,.
Most common UI seen in women are stress urinary incontinence and urge urinary incontinence ; men- urge urinary incontinence. It is also seen in children but as the child gets older nervous system develops and he/she decides to void with conciseness. Management includes conservative treatment, behavioral therapy , pelvic floor therapy , bladder retraining, fixed occluder devices for incontnence in men, collecting devices in men, medications and surgery.
