Stye :
Stye is medically termed a hordeolum. It is a small, benign, and painful lump that is caused due to bacterial infections. Stye can be present on the external layer or internal layer of the eyelids. It is accompanied by eyelid irritation, eye discharge, frequent tearing and other signs of infection like swelling and redness . Cosmetic eyewear products, clogging of the glands present in the eyelids due to poor hygiene practices and touching the eyes with contaminated hands are other significant causes of developing a stye. An ophthalmologist or a general physician evaluates the clinical symptoms with physical examination and investigations if required. The treatment protocol includes management with a course of antibiotics and pain relieving medications. Additionally, the application of warm compresses, limiting screen time and adherence to good eye hygiene practices will alleviate the symptoms. The stye will gradually resolve within a few days. In case the stye reoccurs or the symptoms worsen, seek medical assistance immediately.
