Unlike the ideal pregnancy where the implantation process takes place in the lining of the uterus, in Ectopic pregnancy the embryo attaches outside the uterus. It is considered as a complication of pregnancy marked with symptoms similar to that of normal pregnancy but an ectopic pregnancy cannot be continued as normal and requires termination.
Although the cause of this condition is not clear, factors like scarring and inflammation of the fallopian tubules due to a previous surgery, or infection, hormonal factors and genetic abnormalities can increase the risk of ectopic pregnancy in females. As this condition is fatal to the mother, and however the embryo fails to develop further in such conditions, treatment mainly involves medical or surgical termination.
