Vitiligo :

Vitiligo is a chronic autoimmune skin condition in which body's immunity attacks its own cells, here its melanocytes that produce skin pigment known as melanin thus loosing the pigment producing cells, which leads to white patches. The exact cause for vitiligo is not known but the major risk factors include autoimmune response, genetic predisposition (family history increases risk) and other environmental factors. Signs and symptoms include white, irregularly shaped patches on skin, loss of skin pigmentation, eye problems like inflammation or vision changes and high risk of sun burn due to lack of melanin etc,. Diagnosis is by physical examination and wood's lamp examination under UV light to highlight patches. Although there is no permanent cure for vitiligo it can be managed is by topical corticosteroids, topical immunomodulators, photo therapy, systemic corticosteroids, sun protection etc.
