Rhinorrhea :
A person is said to have rhinorrhea, commonly called as runny nose, if they experience an excess drainage of mucus from the nose. Nasal mucus glands, epithelial cells, blood vessels in the nose and the immune system contribute to runny nose. The primary causes of rhinorrhea are viral infections like common cold, influenza, COVID- 19, when a person eats spicy food and allergies due to pollen, pet dander or dust. Rhinorrhea also occurs when a person is exposed to cold temperatures, due to shedding tears and other conditions like sinus infection, gustatory rhinitis, pregnancy rhinitis, nasal polyps, presence of a foreign body in the nose, non allergic rhinitis, certain medications like birth control pills, erectile dysfunction medications and antidepressants, opioid withdrawal and cerebrospinal fluid leakage. There is no treatment required for rhinorrhea, usually. One should consult an ENT doctor if the condition doesn't get better in ten days.
