Muscular dystrophy (MD) is a rare group of neuromuscular diseases that cause progressive weakness of muscles, degeneration leading to muscle wasting and loss of motor function. There are over 30 different type of mucular dystrophies of which DMD (Duchene muscular dystrophy ) accounts for almost 50% of the cases. Muscular dystrophies are caused by mutations in the genes which are involved in making muscle proteins. These mutations are either inherited from parents or may occur spontaneously during early development. Muscular dystrophies may be X-linked recessive, autosomal recessive or autosomal dominant.

Signs and symptoms of muscular distrophies include poor balance, progressive muscle wasting , scoliosis (curvature of the spine and back), progressive inability to walk, waddling gait, calf deformation, limited range of movement, respiratory difficulty, cardiomyopathy, muscle spasms, weakness of muscles of hip and thigh muscle strength (Gowers's sign). Diagnosis of MD is done by combined approach of physical examination, genetic testing , muscle biopsy, electromyography etc,. Currently there is no cure for MD but rehabilitation is provided by physical therapy, occupational therapy, orthotic intervention, speech therapy, respiratory therapy etc.,
