Melasma :
Melasma, also called as mask of pregnancy, is a skin problem which is characterized by the presence of blue gray or brown patches or freckle like spots on the skin. The areas of the body that can be affected by melasma include any part of the skin that is exposed to sunlight (cheeks, chin, nose, above the upper lip and the forehead). The risk factors of melasma are high in pregnant women, due to hormonal changes and increased levels of hormones estrogen and progesterone. Melasma is categorized into various types such as epidermal, dermal and mixed melasma. The factors responsible for causing melasma are antiseizure medications, contraceptive therapy, estrogen or diethylstilbestrol, hypothyroidism, genetic conditions, cosmetics, LED screens, phototoxic drugs like NSAIDS, antibiotics, pregnancy and targeted therapies, scented soaps, tanning beds and skin care products. Melasma is quiet difficult to manage and thus patients should avoid the triggering factors and take necessary care.
