Goniotomy :

Goniotomy is a surgical intervention to treat condition like glaucoma. They create a new pathway in the trabecular mesh work from which the excess fluid which is blocked can be drained out of the eye. It helps in relieving increased pressure in the eye there by treating the glaucoma. Goniotomy is preferably done on people who are suffering from primary open angle glaucoma, congenital glaucoma, certain types of secondary glaucoma such as caused by uveitis, glaucoma that does not respond well to the medication, etc. It is typically contraindicated in cases of advanced stage of glaucoma and if there is any damage to the optic nerve. It is a minimal out patient surgery which does not require any hospital stay after surgery.

A tiny incision is made in cornea, a specialized microscope is used to view the angle of drainage and a new opening is created at the trabecular mesh work. The whole procedure is done under the effect of local anesthesia.
