Bone Marrow transplant (BMT) :
Bone marrow is the important tissue in the human body that makes red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. It is found in the centre of most of the bones and its functioning is essential to live. Bone marrow transplant is also known as stem cell transplant replaces unhealthy bone marrow with healthy cells. Stem cell therapy is used to treat certain types of cancer like leukemia, myeloma, lymphoma and other immune system disorders. There are two types of stem cell transplant 1. Autologous - where we use patients stem cells and 2. Allogenic - we use donors stem cells, usually done after doing a HLA matching test. Patients might have to stay on anti rejection medication for few months and then it would be tapered off. Risks would include risk of infection , organ dysfunction.
