Short Stature :
Short stature is a problem seen in children, in which a child is shorter than other children of the same age group, due to hormonal complaints. The primary causes of short stature include genetic conditions and endocrine diseases involving cushing's disease, growth hormone deficiency, hypothyroidism, chronic problems such as asthma, anemia, sickle cell anemia, diabetes, heart disease, kidney problems, inflammatory bowel disease, bone and skeletal diseases such as rickets or achondroplasia and genetic conditions like down syndrome, Williams syndrome, turner syndrome and juvenile idiopathic arthritis. To evaluate short stature in children, various diagnostic tests like complete blood picture, X- ray of growth plates, screening to check for growth hormone deficiency, imaging scans to detect the presence of any tumors, and DNA analysis are used. The treatment plan to manage short stature involves treating the causative factor and methods like limb lengthening surgery for achondroplasia and thyroid hormone replacement therapy for hypothyroidism.
