Impetigo is a bacterial skin condition which is most commonly seen in young children. It is clinically presented with painful, itchy blisters around the mouth and other parts of the body. Blisters can easily burst open with yellow or tan fluid content, they may spread to other parts and cause erythematous skin around blisters, underlying swollen lymph nodes are other associated symptoms of impetigo. Impetigo has three types of disease manifestation which are non-bullous, bullous and ecthyma. Staphylococcus aureus and Group A streptococcus are the strains of bacteria which are responsible for causing the impetigo.
Some of the underlying infestations with head lice, eczema and scabies may lead to impetigo in children while tattoo infections are a route to develop impetigo in adults. Impetigo is managed by antibacterial regimen with application of topical antibiotics like mupirocin and use of oral antibiotics like cephalosporin. For milder forms of impetigo, over-the-counter bacitracin ointment deemed to be beneficial. Following routine and proper skin care protocol may aid in faster recovery from impetigo condition.
