Blepharitis
Q.

Hi Doctor, I have a flaky substance around my eye lashes which is constant and known as blepharitis .please help me with any solution to get rid of this problem

A.

Blepharitis is a common eye condition that affects the eyelids. It happens when flaky material collects near the base of your eyelashes, leading to the colonization of bacteria, causing lid inflammation or clogged tear glands. This can lead to irritation, redness, and sometimes a feeling like there's something in your eye. Here are some key points about blepharitis:

  • Symptoms: People with blepharitis may experience red and swollen eyelids, crusty or oily debris near the eyelashes, a gritty or burning sensation in the eyes, and sometimes, the eyelids may stick together upon waking up.
  • Causes: Blepharitis can be caused by bacteria or skin conditions like dandruff (seborrheic dermatitis). It can also be linked to certain conditions like dry eyes or rosacea.
  • Treatment: Treatment usually involves daily eyelid hygiene. You can gently clean your eyelids with warm water and baby shampoo. Your doctor may also prescribe antibiotic ointments or eye drops if there's an infection. Sometimes, warm compresses can help loosen the debris. Currently, at Pristine Eye Hospitals, a novel procedure(first in India) call BlephEx- Lid hygiene restoration procedure is performed to provide complete relief from blepharitis and the byproducts of the bacteria.
  • Chronic Condition: Blepharitis is often a chronic condition, meaning it may not go away completely but can be managed with proper care and treatment.
  • Importance of Eye Hygiene: Keeping your eyelids clean is crucial in managing blepharitis and preventing flare-ups.

If you suspect you have blepharitis or experience any persistent eye irritation, it's essential to see an eye doctor for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan. They can help you manage the condition and keep your eyes healthy.
