Gastritis :

Gastritis is a condition in which stomach lining is inflamed. A thin mucosal layer protects the stomach from acids and other enzymes. It is inflamed as a protective mechanism in presence of an infection or other substance. Multiple factors lead to gastritis as infections[ bacterial or viral], drug induced[chronic use of NSAID, cocaine], auto immune diseases, reduced blood supply due to chronic stress. Erosive gastritis leads to peptic ulcer disease which leads to bleeding and anaemia in the long run. Unhealed ulcers lead to GI perforations. Chronic cases might leads metaplasia and stomach cancer. Upper GI fluoroscopic x rays called as upper GI series is used to diagnose. Its usually self limiting condition but use of PPIs and antibiotics might be advised by the gastroenterologist or general practitioner
