Carotid Stenosis :
The carotid arteries are responsible for carrying blood to the brain. Carotid stenosis is a condition in which these arteries become narrow due to a build-up of fat and other substances. This condition reduces the blood flow to the brain. If these arteries become too narrow for blood to pass, then the individual may have a stroke. A piece of the plaque may break off and block the blood flow completely, resulting in a stroke. In many cases of carotid stenosis, the patients do not experience any symptoms. However, some experience a Transient Ischemic Attack (a mini-stroke), which may persist and turn into a stroke. MRI, CTA, and angiography may be required to diagnose this condition. It is treated with medications and lifestyle changes if a carotid artery is less than 50% blocked. Surgery may be recommended if the narrowing is severe.
