Dandruff :

Dandruff also known as seborrheic dermatitis is a skin condition that mainly effects the scalp. It causes flaking , itching, redness of the scalp. It is said to be caused by a fungus known as Malasezzia. The specific cause of dandruff is unclear but it can be caused by various genetic and environmental factors. Dandruff is said to a result of oil from sebaceous glands, metabolic byproducts of skin microbes (specifically Malassezia yeasts) and individual susceptibility and allergy sensitivity.

Seasonal changes (increases during the winters), stress, hormonal conditions, immunosuppression effects the dandruff. It can cause hair loss, infection in some cases. Management of dandruff includes a multifaceted approach , that includes medicated shampoos that has anti-fungal , antibacterial or anti-inflammatory properties , topical treatments that can be applied to soothe the scalp and reduce the flaking, frequent shampooing , stress management, hair care adjustments, anti fungal treatments and or consulting a dermatologist for proper management and treatment.
