An infectious disease specialist refers to a general physician who deals with the diagnosis and management of infectious diseases. To pursue career as an infectious disease specialist, the needed academic qualifications include graduation in MBBS, MD in General Medicine and fellowships or DM in Tropical Medicine and Tropical Diseases. A wide range of acute and chronic infections are treated by an infectious disease specialist including E.coli infections, leukocytosis, fevers, lyme disease and other tick-borne diseases, sexually transmitted infections, HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, meningococcal disease, rubella, mumps, measles, monkey pox, streptococcal infections, tuberculosis and whooping cough. An infectious disease specialist collaborates with other health care professionals to identify the organism causing infections, understand the emerging infections, examines the patient and evaluates laboratory tests like blood work.
