Burns can occur due to heat, cold and electricity. The skin is made of multiple layers and there are various soft tissues underneath the skin. The extent of the damage to these structures determines the severity of the burns and is categorized as first, second and third degree burns.
First-degree burns are common and can be treated at home. It is best to run the burn under cold running tap water. There is no need to apply ice directly over the burnt surface and instead a thin layer of antibiotic creams can be applied to prevent infections. If there is a second degree burn that involves both the first and second layers of the skin, care should be taken. A cream that contains anti biotic properties can be prescribed to reduce redness and swelling. This can help with faster healing. On the other hand, third-degree burns reach the fat layer which can be life-threatening. This type of burn often requires external skin grafts to replace damaged tissue. It is the type of Burns and the extent of the Burns both areimportant indeterminimg the outcome .
