Thyroidectomy :
It is mostly performed under general anesthesia and is taken over a course of hours depending on the extent of the surgery. Monitoring post-operative care requires close vigil for complication like bleed, infection, or injury to surrounding structures including the parathyroid and vocal cords. There will be minimal swelling and discomfort post-operatively, which could be managed by some mild pain medication. This patient having undergone total thyroidectomy would definitely require hormone replacement for normal metabolism to ensue. This would require a series of follow-up visits with the endocrinologist confirming the levels of thyroid hormone are well controlled and further adjustments of treatments for optimum health are administered.
