Psoriasis :

Psoriasis is a chronic disease on autoimmune basis whereby the skin grows too fast. As a result, the pores open speedily and lead to accumulation of thick, red, scaly plaques that can be itchy and painful. This chronic disease has no established cause; however, there are several predisposing factors related to either genetics or the environment. This includes stress, infections, or injuries. Symptoms typically include raised, inflamed lesions covered with silvery white scales; such lesions often occur frequently on elbows, knees, scalp, and lower back.

Flare ups vary in the degree that they commonly are accompanied by joint aching or swelling in psoriatic arthritis. Since it is not curable, its management is symptomatic relief and flare-up reduction. Treatment ranges from topical medications like corticosteroids, or vitamin D analogs, to phototherapy or systemic drugs that could be more debilitating, like serious cases of methotrexate or biologics. Lifestyle modification, plus stress management and healthy dieting, will further avoid symptoms. Regular follow up with a dermatologist will help in proper management and follow up with the patient's condition.
