Rickets :
Rickets is a bone disease that affects the development of bones in children. Lack of vitamin D is the major factor responsible for causing rickets. The significant signs of rickets are bone pain, growth delays, muscle weakness, seizures, dental complaints like cavities, swelling of the ends of ribs, unusual curving of the spine or shape of the skull, weak muscle tone and widening of knees and ankles or wrists. Babies who are born prematurely and those who do not get enough direct sunlight are at higher risk of suffering from rickets. The complication of rickets, if left untreated, includes bone fractures, chronic pain and skeletal deformities. The treatment options to manage rickets include taking high amounts of vitamin D and calcium by eating foods rich in calcium and vitamin D, including milk, fatty fish, and cereal, and taking nutritional supplements. Staying in the sunlight also helps in increasing the levels of vitamin D.
