Rectal Prolapse :
Rectal prolapse is meant by rectum slips down inside the anus. This condition occurs due to the weakening of muscles that hold the rectum in its place. The presenting complains of rectal prolapse are a feeling like there is something left inside the anus after passing the stool, a feeling of pressure or bulge in the anus, a red, fleshy mass hanging out of the anus, leakage of stool, anal pain or itching and mucus or blood from the anus. Rectal prolapse is diagnosed by running tests like defecography, anorectal manometry, digital rectal exam, lower GI series (barium enema), electromyography and colonoscopy. The treatment plan to correct rectal prolapse involves a surgical procedure called rectopexy and another is to perform abdominal surgery through anus. The side effects of this surgery for rectal prolapse are blood clots, bleeding, infection, injury to nearby organs, anastomotic leak, constipation, sexual dysfunction and anesthesia complications.
