Asthma :
Asthma affects lungs causing inflammation and constriction of airways with excessive mucus production, making it difficult to breath. Most common symptoms include chest tightness, cough and shortness of breath with wheezing on lung examination. Asthma is triggered by allergies, respiratory infection, tobacco smoking, exercise, stress or genetics, predominantly in black population compared to other race. We have intermittent and persistent asthma depending upon the severity. Asthma can be managed by bronchodilator which help relaxes muscle around the airway, anti - inflammatory clear up the excessive mucus production and swelling and corticosteroid inhalers/nebulisers help is easing breathing difficulty. X-ray chest, spirometry, peak expiratory flow, allergy test is advisable for diagnosing the severity before starting the treatment. Preventive measures that should be taken to control asthma flares are avoid exposure to dust, pollen, traffic, active and passive tobacco smoke and anything which can trigger allergic reaction .
